How to create a survey people can answer

Learn how to plan a survey, choose question types, write neutral prompts, and test the filling experience before launch.

Start with a decision

Write down the decision the survey should support. “Which onboarding step needs improvement?” is more useful than “Learn about users.” Define who should answer and how you will use the result. Remove questions whose answers will not influence that decision.

Choose a type for each answer

Use single choice when answers are mutually exclusive and multiple choice when several options can apply. Use a labeled rating scale for intensity, and short text for a concise fact. An optional long-text question can capture what your options missed. Include “Not applicable” where respondents may lack the relevant experience.

Write neutral, single-purpose questions

Replace “How easy and fast was setup?” with two questions: one about ease and one about time. Avoid leading phrasing such as “How much did you enjoy our helpful tutorial?” Ask “How useful was the tutorial?” instead, with both positive and negative response options.

Test the whole filling experience

Complete the survey on a phone and a desktop. Leave required fields empty, try longer answers, and check page transitions. Ask someone unfamiliar with your project to explain each question in their own words. In FormPico’s current preview, use sample data to explore these steps locally; live response collection still requires the production backend.
