Writing survey questions people answer honestly
Fix double-barrelled, leading, and vague questions with concrete rewrites, plus a quick check you can run before publishing.
One idea per question
“How fast and reliable is our support?” asks two things, and a respondent may rate speed high and reliability low. Split it. The same applies to every “and”: if the two halves could receive different answers, they belong in separate questions.
Remove leading and loaded wording
“How much did you enjoy our new dashboard?” assumes enjoyment. Ask “How useful is the dashboard?” and offer the full range from very useful to not useful at all. Watch for loaded adjectives such as “our helpful support team” and delete them.
Give options that cover the real range
Include a neutral middle, at least one negative option, and “Not applicable” or “Prefer not to say” where those are honest answers. Forcing a choice between equally bad options produces data you cannot use. Test the question on someone outside the project and ask them to explain it back to you.
