A practical form design checklist

Check form labels, required fields, mobile layouts, error messages, and data handling before asking people to submit information.

Make every field understandable

Use a visible label rather than relying on placeholder text. Put format guidance before the input where it is needed. “Work email” tells people more than “Email” when you truly need a business address. Only request information required for the stated purpose.

Make errors recoverable

Mark required fields consistently. Put a specific error near the relevant field and preserve other answers after validation. “Enter an email address with an @ symbol” is more actionable than “Invalid input.” Test keyboard focus and ensure errors can be understood without relying on red alone.

Check the smallest screen

Keep labels, input controls, and help text within the viewport. Avoid two-column question layouts on small phones. Test long option labels and zoomed text. Ensure submit controls remain easy to reach and that the keyboard does not obscure the field being edited.

Verify what happens after submission

A success screen proves only that the interface reached that state. Before collecting real information, verify the answer is stored, the right person can access it, and retention and deletion practices match the notice shown to respondents. Test the actual deployed workflow with non-sensitive sample data.
