When to split a form into steps
Break a long form into pages that reduce abandonment, with an honest progress signal and a plan for partial answers.
Split by topic, not by count
Group questions that belong together: contact details, then project details, then preferences. A step that mixes unrelated fields feels arbitrary even when every page holds the same number of questions. Three to five questions per page is a workable target.
Show progress honestly
A progress bar that jumps backwards, or reaches ninety percent on the first page, damages trust. Show the number of steps, or a bar that reflects the real proportion complete. Test what happens when a required field on an earlier page fails validation.
Decide how partial answers are treated
If someone leaves mid-form, your notice should say whether a partial entry is stored or discarded. That is a data-handling decision rather than a design preference, so it has to match what you tell people before they start filling anything in.
